George Hallett... “the People’s Sheriff”!!

George Hallett was born in the “Swampoodle” section of North Philadelphia and grew up within earshot of Connie Mack Stadium, home of the Phillies. He attended St. Columba’s grade school and Northeast Catholic High School. His summers as a child were spent in North Wildwood before the family moved there permanently in 1963.

George enlisted for the United States Army in Cape May Court House before being shipped to Viet Nam, like many young men in 1965. He served with great distinction and a list of his military medals can be found under MILITARY. Returning to civilian life, he served as a policeman in North Wildwood for two summers, while attending Atlantic Community College, where he was on the Honor Roll two of the four semesters, graduating with an Associate Degree in Marketing. With his college diploma and his Top Secret clearance from the Army, George was immediately hired by the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC and less than a year later was assigned to the U.S. Secret Service at the White House protecting the President and his family. Determined to make his mark in federal law enforcement, George furthered his law enforcement education at the American University for Administration of Justice, graduating with honors. George is a member of the American University Honor Society. In 1974, he met and married his wife, Marilyn, as they settled into life in the Washington-Virginia area.

In 1973, George was responsible for the arrest of an intruder trying to harm President Richard Nixon while he was in the residence and received a Letter of Commendation from the head of White House Security. Soon after, he was offered and accepted, a position with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and spent the next 23 years working on federal criminal cases investigating Food Stamp Fraud, Health Care Fraud, and Contract Fraud. In 1986, George was promoted to Supervisor of Special Agents in the Investigation of White Collar Fraud. This led to his being hired in the Inspector General’s Office at HEW, rising from Assistant Regional Inspector General to Regional Inspector General overseeing 45 Special Agents in a five state region with a budget of $10,000,000(in today’s standard). His position required the family moving often while George worked out of federal offices in Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and Boston. In 1999, George and Marilyn decided to move home to their beloved Cape May County. George retired from the Federal Government and was hired by the Cape May County Prosecutors’ Office to create the Insurance Fraud Division and was directly responsible for the increase of indictments and convictions of insurance fraud cases.

It was from the Prosecutor’s Office, Detective Hallett saw a lack of leadership and a need for changes in the Sheriff’s Office, IN PARTICULAR, at the Cape May County jail. He decided to take action and resigned his position at the Prosecutor's Office to run for Cape May County Sheriff. With the support of his wife and children, Christopher and Jennifer, he took his plunge into the world of politics and announced his candidacy for Sheriff. He did so with the passion and commitment to serve the people of Cape May County as their Sheriff. He knows he can make a difference…..as “the People’s Sheriff”!!
